The Need to Feel Whole Again After Something So Awful Happens
M.O. Walsh has written a very heart-felt, old-fashioned Southern novel in the best sense. He creates the languid pacing, and sweet-tea flavors of Baton Rouge from the point of view of a high school boy, the narrator, living in a single-parent home in the suburbs from the late 1980s to early 1990s. The novel is full of cultural references from the headlines and the type of music teens listened to in that period.
Much of the novel feels like a memoir with very compelling exposition that captures the spirit of New Orleans. In one of my favorite passages about how the sweltering heat has given birth to the love of great food and lots of eating, the narrator writes, "When everything else is burning, sweating, beaten down by a torturous sun, only your tongue can be fooled. So you tease it with flavors like promises, small escapes from a blatantly burdensome land."
Out of this setting we are confronted with a hideous crime that ruptures the narrator's sense of innocence...
