A very personal window into the history of PTSD
PTSD has been a hot topic recently, because of its relevance to the military, the survivors of disasters and terrorist attacks, and even potentially the development of personality disorders in childhood. I’ve read a fair amount about it, but have never encountered any material so engaging and personal as “The Evil Hours.”

This book is very thoroughly researched and beautifully written. Morris draws you into the vortex of his own trauma, experienced when he was a reporter in Iraq, and uses it to keep you grounded as he takes you on a journey through the history of “shell shock,” as it was once known. He brings the reader along as he tries various therapies and treatments, interspersing his story with historical anecdotes and the stories of fellow sufferers he meets along the way. There is no self-pity or hand-wringing. Morris’ very frank but matter-of-fact style allows the dreadful reality of this disorder to creep up on you.
