The Train to Crystal City: A Journey's End
I just recently got the opportunity to preview a upcoming release, "The Train to Crystal City" by Jan Jarboe Russell. This is the untold story of not just Japanese-Americans held in US concentration camps during WWII, but the largely unknown story of German-Americans and Italian-Americans as well, many of whom had lived in the US for years but were stripped of the US citizenship and imprisoned. In addition, this story reveals how the American born spouses and their children were also incarcerated as well. That would be story enough, but there's more.
"The Train to Crystal City" also details a secret prisoner exchange designed and approved by FDR whereby these now former Americans were sent to enemy combatant countries along with their spouses and children, often against their will in exchange for key individuals being held behind enemy lines, including downed airmen and US businessmen. The story details how the US military kidnapped foreign...

Not hilarious, yet a lot of fun.
Patton Oswalt is one of my top five all-time favorite stand-up comedians. That said, most of this book isn’t funny, so don’t expect this to be a few hours of belly laughs. However, all the things Patton is passionate about I am also passionate about. In that way, this was like listening to a monologue of someone I’d consider a friend because of our similar interests and because I respect his opinion and insight. Obviously, given the name of the book, he talks a lot about film, but also art – art in general and the kind hung on museum walls. And of course, comedy. I love reading about people who stick it out and ultimately make it in the arts. My favorite quote is from when he’s describing a group who’d moved to LA to see if they could make it in TV and film: “We’d piss and moan ... pointing out how unfair and whimsical and chaotic the entertainment business was, how it rarely rewarded the truly talented. NONE OF US COULD SEE HOW IT NEVER...

Not what I expected, but well worth the read!
The only other book by Anita Diamant I've read is The Red Tent, which is one of my favorite novels. Because of that, I was a little surprised at this one as it is so completely different. The Red Tent is lush and evocative. The Boston Girl is a Jewish Grandmother recounting her life.

And it is absolutely delightful!

I think this book hit me on two emotional levels. For one thing, Addie Baum reminds me of my grandmother. Sort of. On the surface, there probably isn't that much in common between Addie, a Jewish girl growing up in the North End of Boston, and my grandmother, a Norwegian girl growing up in small town North Dakota, other than they are about the same age. But, Addie reminded me of what I always pictured my grandmother to be as a young woman--spunky and ahead of her time.

The other tie for me was that this book takes place in Boston and I lived there for 3 years. While I don't miss the city, it is fun to read about place with which I'm...
