"Love is not the same as forgiveness."
I've always thought it must be tough to be the accomplished but always less-well known sibling of a famous brother or sister. In "Vanessa and Her Sister," we are treated to Vanesa Bell's, the wife of Clive and sister of Virginia (Stephen) Woolf, account of being a member of a well-educated and accomplished family and circle of would-be famous intellectuals. The circle, known as the Bloomsbury group, includes journalist Lytton Strachey, novelist E.M. Forster, economist John Maynard Keynes, Leonard Woolf (then a cadet in the Colonial Civil Service, artist Margery "Snow" Snowden, and the two Stephen brothers: Thoby and Adrian, both Cambridge undergraduates. When the book opens, the four siblings are living together and hosting meetings of the circle. As the book progresses, we get to learn more about each one's work and personal lives, and how their paths intersect.

There are three main threads, among all the diary entries and correspondence by the various...

Falls short of my expectations

The characters are all the same. If the chapters weren't headed with the names of the characters, you couldn't tell the difference between them. The voices, too, are a little precious. Given the awfulness of the characters...and they're all despicable...I would have liked a bit more attention to voice. Instead, this is a book that's all plot, and it moves along, but as I read, I found it impossible to suspend my disbelief. What are the chances of so many sociopaths coming together? And all so similar? No humor in this book, which might have improved it; it's a straightforward grind. I liked his first book, but this one's kind of a chore. And the comparisons to Patricia Highsmith simply seem inaccurate. But I'm clearly in the minority.

[Young & Childish] It read more like middle grade than young adult
Upon starting Girl Online, my first impressions were:

1. This author uses way too many exclamation marks.
2. This book feels extremely childish.

I eventually got over that first point. Well, either I “got over” it or the author stopped using so many exclamation marks… But that second point continued throughout the story.

Maybe part of it is my fault. I feel like a lot of the YA books out there feature 16-18 year old main characters, but they always sound so mature. They could pass for more like 18-20. However, in Girl Online, the main character Penny was only 15… and she sounded like it (if not younger). Everything about her just screamed “child”. It felt like a very young young adult book (or old middle grade). Sometimes she acted more like 13 or 14. The four year old often acted more grown up than Penny did.

So maybe this rating is my fault. At 23, I’m not the target audience, but I read it...

Greaney Continues The Legacy
As is expected with a Tom Clancy novel, the strong geopolitics on display mimic a lot of recognizable real-world influences with deft shades of fictionalizing. Here, we see a North Korea that is attempting to extract an estimated 12 trillion dollars worth of rare earth minerals, a huge amount of hard capital that would allow them to buy nuclear weapons, as well as friends with influence in the UN. The ambitions of Choi Ji-Hoon, the young supreme leader of North Korea who has inherited the nation from his recently deceased father, is clearly influenced by real-life ruler of North Korea, Kim Jong-Un, right on down to the actions taken against his uncle. Author Mark Greaney, in true Clancy fashion, is playing in a very recognizable modern world to craft a superb of-the-moment technothriller.

Although I enjoyed Greaney's first solo outing in the Clancy franchise with this past summer's release of Support and Defend, I found the climax of that book to veer off into waters more...

Highly enjoyable sequel for fans of YA and Mermaids.
This review originally appeared on www.readplayreview.com

Reviewed last year, Deep Blue (Waterfire Saga #1) was a fast paced and highly enjoyable read about the undersea adventures of a group of young mermaids.

Deep Blue was good, but it turns out I enjoyed the sequel, Rogue Wave, even more.

What’d I think?

Last year I really liked Deep Blue, giving it four stars even though some of the dialogue choices were a bit out of place (I distinctly remember someone using the term FOMO). The world was well constructed, the magic system of songspells was beautifully crafted and the main characters were varied and interesting.

It seems Jennifer Donnelly took notice of the dialogue issue while writing the follow up, Rogue Wave. It flows more naturally and is a far better book because of it. Plus with all of the world building out of the way in the first book, we are dropped straight into the exciting parts of the plot.

Not quite enough of a mystery or a protagonist for me
After I read the 12th Russell/Holmes book, The Pirate King, I thought I was done with the series I'd previously enjoyed so much. In that book, Holmes was offstage almost the entire time and Mary was at her self-satisfied and complaining worst. And that boat trip was the dullest ever. But Dreaming Spies, with its title that plays on the "dreaming spires" that Matthew Arnold attributed to Oxford drew me in. I've always enjoyed Oxford-based mysteries.

Sure enough, Oxford book-ends the story, but the action mainly takes place in flashback, on another boat trip (oh, no!) and in the Far East. This is another slow boat, but not to China; instead, to Japan. Aboard ship, Russell and Holmes meet a young woman named Haruki Sato who may not be what she seems. Holmes also spots an aristocrat he suspects of being a blackmailer. And then a passenger goes missing . . .

In this series, Laurie R. King has taken to emphasize, more and more, the culture and politics of...

If you want aliens, cats that come back or creepy clowns, this is not the book for you. If you love well written King storys, it is. If you enjoyed Shawshank and Stand by Me ect., this book will make you happy. 11/22/63 was good, but still used the supernatural to move the story, here it's just people. I think King is at his best when he uses the characters that always feel real.

Enjoy a good story? Tired of the usual crap? Read this.

Unbelievably Disappointing Sequel
Last year when I read The Rosie Project, it blew me away. (My review here.) 5 stars, funniest book I'd read in ages, I bought copies for friends and family, I sung its praises to all who would listen. So I had high hopes for The Rosie Effect, but as is so often the case with sequels, I should have quit while I was ahead.

The Rosie Project was a joy to read. I devoured it in an afternoon. The Rosie Effect was the opposite: I had to keep taking breaks and thinking about other things because the reading experience was literally traumatizing. This is not a fun read. It's an engaging read, because I enjoyed Rosie and Don so much from the previous book that I pulled for them and wanted to know what would happen, but it's painful, frustrating, vicariously embarrassing, anxiety-provoking, anger-making, and sad.

And worst of all? It isn't funny.

For those not familiar with the Rosie phenomenon, Don Tillman is a genetics professor whose Asperger's Syndrome (on...

What can I say, I will always love Travis, but after reading this, I think him and Thomas are almost even as my favorite. We get to see a different side of Thomas in this book and I absolutely love Liis in this and how fierce she is. This is a must read! Jamie McGuire rocks it again!!

Zero steps forward, three steps back.
What the heck happened? The previous book ("Iced") was an interesting story with a novel character, and I was looking forward to the confrontation between Mac and Dani. While "Iced" did most things right, "Burned" did everything wrong. First, it seems that Mac had turned into a vapid, pointless, mouth-breathing excuse for a heroine that turns into a drooling idiot anytime that a dreamy, hunky man crosses her line of sight or even crosses her mind. It's like the author completely forgot how to balance an active lead's romantic interests with being a useful and proactive heroine. Mac degenerated in this book from what she had been in previous efforts. She seemed to lose every argument that she had with anyone, particularly the dreamy, hunky men.

Also, the author managed to totally ruin the character of Dani. Dani used to be the most interesting character, partially because we got to see what a young, rambunctious, and fearless young woman could...

Great Main Character, Somewhat of a Weak Plot
I was completely enchanted by the main character, Flavia de Luce and this book in general – at least most of the way through.

After a while, I did find myself becoming a bit tired of the constant sinister warnings, “be afraid, be very afraid – but I can’t tell you why.” There is way too much suspicion and suspense and not enough reasons for it, and certainly, by the end, not enough explanation. Let me clarify –

Flavia de Luce, the heroine of several previous books, is a 12-year-old girl who can (rather tritely) be referred to as “precocious.” She’s brilliant and, again, I’m sure reviewer after reviewer has spoken of her being “wise beyond her years.” (Really, I’m trying to find a more clever and original way of saying it, but then, I’m a reader and reviewer, not a great author and that’s why you’re reading my words for free.) I love the character. She thinks (at...

Best Offer for Twelve Days (A John Wells Novel)

The best Alex Berenson novel yet...

Twelve Days never stops for a second as John Wells travels around the world trying to stop a war between Iran and the United States. Somebody has faked evidence that Iran attempted to smuggle bomb grade uranium into the United States and the President draws a line in the sand - show us your facilities or we attack. Iran retaliates by downing airliners. Sadly, this book could be all too real. As Wells counts down the 12 days until the US attacks, he goes against one of the richest men in the world to try and stop the war before it starts. while you find out the "Whodunnit" part of the novel pretty early, the race to see if Wells and company can stop toe attack makes for a real page-turner.

Wells is an interesting character - a Western spy who converted to Islam - it allows the reader to see into another side of the Muslim faith all too often hidden behind the radicals.

‘My name is Uhtred. I am the son of Uhtred, who was the son of Uhtred, and his father was also called Uhtred.’
This is the eighth instalment in the Saxon Series, set in 10th century Mercia and Northumbria, featuring my hero Uhtred of Bebbanburg. Uhtred, raised by the Danes is a pagan warlord, fighting on the side of the Saxons – especially at the side of King Alfred’s daughter Aethelflaed ‘the Lady of the Mercians’.

The forces of Wessex and Mercia have united against the Danes, but the instability of Britain’s kingdoms is made worse by the continued threat of Viking raids. Aethelred, Lord of the Mercians is dying, and there is no clear successor Uhtred supports Athelflaed to be the next ruler, but can a woman be accepted even if that woman is the wife of Aethelred and the sister of the king of Wessex? Uhtred himself is still suffering from the wound he received at the end of the previous instalment and is vulnerable. He’s in a reflective mood as well, thinking of the past and family, instructing his son on how to be a warrior...

What can I say?...Kellerman's the best!
Another excellent book. I've never found a book that is 100% excellent but Jonathan Kellerman comes the closest to perfection. His main characters, Alex and Milo, continue to keep me riveted page after page until before I know it the book has come to an end. However, the one drawback of this book was the ending. It was too abrupt for me. I expected to turn another Kindle page for more of the story and there was the dedication. Sort of shocked me even though all the loose ends were neatly tied up and there really wasn't anyplace else to go with the story but the ending just seemed sudden. As far as the story itself is concerned, the plot, psychological dissection of the killer, pursuit of the killer, and final outcome were as usual, excellent. Kellerman's writing style flows so evenly and easily that his books are never a chore to "get through" and you won't find any typos in these books. Other reviewers have provided details of the plot so I'll end this review as a strong...

Must admit I approach so-called "literary page-turners" with a great deal of skepticism

Must admit I approach so-called "literary page-turners" with a great deal of skepticism. "Page-turner" to the lit set is more like golf than football, which means watching the grass grow. But by page 20 you're on that proverbial freight train to hell, although I must say the scenery is gorgeous and the conversation along the way is memorable (to say the least). What a book! The last thing I read that even approached this was Silence of the Lambs and that was WAY too long ago. Johnston is an artful writer which, to me anyway, doesn't mean his prose is pretty, but that he gets maximum voltage out of every sentence. Loved it. Recommend. Who will like this book? Cage-fighters with Stanford degrees - but don't let that scare you.

A Shaggy Dog Story, With Some Bite
Lots of fiction works incorporate books or bookstores as central to their plots. Some make good use of both; I'm thinking here of works like "Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore". Most, though, use a book as a sort of MacGuffin and it could just as easily be a butter dish. Or, the action takes place in a nice atmospheric bookstore that could just as easily be an auto repair shop. "Fikry", though, is different and belongs to that small category of works that really have something to say about books and bookstores and, in this case, booksellers. And that's great.

Fikry is not just a bookseller. He filters his experiences, his thoughts, even pretty much how he lives his life by reference to his favorite books. Everything he perceives has some analogue in a book he once read, and when he isn't living his life he is thinking about or talking about books. It is no accident that the first major character we meet here is a publisher's rep who begins to play a larger and larger role in...

Great way to end the series! Awesome book, but not a stand-alone story
I received a copy of this book early for another website I belong to, so I have had the chance to read this during the past few weeks, so hopefully this review will help you make a decision on if you want to purchase this book or not.

The best way I can think of writing this review is to compose it with two thoughtful sections. One is my overall enjoyment and thoughts about the book, with the second being more specifics about the book itself without giving away any critical information or giving spoilers. Hopefully this will be helpful.

So to start, I will go over the book itself.

Please note there are a tremendous amount of references to the books that have come earlier in this series. I would find this to be a very hard book to read as a stand-alone and I recommend reading the earlier books in the series first.

This book is the last of the Odd Thomas series. In this installment, we find a familiar undertone; good vs evil. The story starts...

Where is the book that was promised?

SPOILERS
I, too, am disappointed with this book. I thought we'd get a battle which included the death of Sheridan. In fact, I needed to see Sheridan dead. And what about the Alchemists? Why didn't we see Sydney's salt solution in action? There was only a hint that it was being used. And these are only two of the questions about the series. There are many more. Maybe RM was saving these questions for the next series. Perhaps one book couldn't cover all the unsolved plot lines because, for me, they are swirling out there, dangling before my eyes without resolve. Conclusion: I felt that this book was a total waste of my anticipation. The book was weak for a grand finale, however, it did a great job as a setup for the next series.

Not what I expected, but well worth the read!
The only other book by Anita Diamant I've read is The Red Tent, which is one of my favorite novels. Because of that, I was a little surprised at this one as it is so completely different. The Red Tent is lush and evocative. The Boston Girl is a Jewish Grandmother recounting her life.

And it is absolutely delightful!

I think this book hit me on two emotional levels. For one thing, Addie Baum reminds me of my grandmother. Sort of. On the surface, there probably isn't that much in common between Addie, a Jewish girl growing up in the North End of Boston, and my grandmother, a Norwegian girl growing up in small town North Dakota, other than they are about the same age. But, Addie reminded me of what I always pictured my grandmother to be as a young woman--spunky and ahead of her time.

The other tie for me was that this book takes place in Boston and I lived there for 3 years. While I don't miss the city, it is fun to read about place with which I'm...
