Falls short of my expectations

The characters are all the same. If the chapters weren't headed with the names of the characters, you couldn't tell the difference between them. The voices, too, are a little precious. Given the awfulness of the characters...and they're all despicable...I would have liked a bit more attention to voice. Instead, this is a book that's all plot, and it moves along, but as I read, I found it impossible to suspend my disbelief. What are the chances of so many sociopaths coming together? And all so similar? No humor in this book, which might have improved it; it's a straightforward grind. I liked his first book, but this one's kind of a chore. And the comparisons to Patricia Highsmith simply seem inaccurate. But I'm clearly in the minority.

Mazes, locked doors, sheep-skinned man.....
A thoughtful, disciplined, lonely boy, a beautiful girl, a bird and a sheep man round out the cast of characters in The Strange Library, a short and strange novel with fewer than 100 pages.

The story begins with an unnamed boy returning his library books and looking for more books before returning home to his waiting mother and his pet bird. At the library he is directed to Room 107, located in the basement of the library, where a gruff old man answers the door and asks him what he wants. Startle by the man, the boy asks for a title that popped into his head on the way from school - "How Taxes are Collected in the Ottoman Empire", but really just anxious to get away from the old man. Unfortunately, he soon finds out that getting out of the library will not be as easy as it was to get in. Be careful what you ask for in this library, and be expected to read the books you ask for -- or else!

Mazes, locked doors, sheep-skinned man, a big angry dog, and...

What can I say?...Kellerman's the best!
Another excellent book. I've never found a book that is 100% excellent but Jonathan Kellerman comes the closest to perfection. His main characters, Alex and Milo, continue to keep me riveted page after page until before I know it the book has come to an end. However, the one drawback of this book was the ending. It was too abrupt for me. I expected to turn another Kindle page for more of the story and there was the dedication. Sort of shocked me even though all the loose ends were neatly tied up and there really wasn't anyplace else to go with the story but the ending just seemed sudden. As far as the story itself is concerned, the plot, psychological dissection of the killer, pursuit of the killer, and final outcome were as usual, excellent. Kellerman's writing style flows so evenly and easily that his books are never a chore to "get through" and you won't find any typos in these books. Other reviewers have provided details of the plot so I'll end this review as a strong...

A brilliantly moving Faustian tale
As if very often the case, I received this unit free in exchange for a review. Also as usual I give my candid opinions about it below.

"The Sculptor" is a modern Faustian tale in which the narrator trades his life for a particular supernatural skill. The plot develops along typical lines and concludes in a final manner making this book entirely self-contained.

To the positive, the book is well-composed and exceptionally touching. The story carries a heavy life lesson and illustrates it in an immensely entertaining and artistic way. McCloud paints some extraordinarily sympathetic characters that make us really care about them by the end. Unfortunately, as previously indicated, the book is self-contained so there is no sequel. Your caring can only carry you so far.

To the negative, the only real negative I can come up with is that some of the art work the protagonist comes up with is rather childish. It would be hard to believe that...
