A brilliant collection of short stories by Pearlman! Worth reading is you can handle mature topics!
I received this book early from another website I belong to. I hope this review is helpful to you.

Pearlman's stories and incredibly descriptive, with an excellent use of symbolism, tone, and some surprisingly cynical surprises.

The short stories primarily take place in Massachusetts, with Rennie as the main character in most.

I must warn you there are some vivid accounts of some deeply troublesome topics, such as female circumcision. For me this was a bit shocking and far outside my comfort zone. However, it was handled in a tactful way and easy to digest once the initial shock wears off.

Overall, the stories are quite intelligent and are based on the simplicity of regular people who experience a shocking or unexpected event/situation. Certainly an interesting, smart, and moving way to spend your time as a reader.

My hat is off to Pearlman and hope you found this review helpful. I didn't want to give too much away. Certainly...

Hearth of Living...

I hate hospitals and hate being sick so I attend my healthy happiness by doing everything possible to stay healthy which happen to be SPORTS, DIET and LESS STRESS. I am well educated about human machine but after this book, after the amazing stories and accomplishment by those geniuses, I have to admit that I look at my heart considerably different. They should make a documentary with this book. Great knowledge and info. Bravo.

What a queer, queer book
What a queer, queer book. I am not quite sure how to begin this review. Hell, I'm not even sure how I would categorize this book. Is this a fairytale? Well, yes, it does have some fairytale aspects. Is this fantasy? Um yes, but not in the "slay the dragon and find the rings" sort of way. Is this about character development? Yes, that too, it's a bit of a coming of age story. Is there a mystery? Yep. Romance? Yep. Oh, and did I mention all of this takes place in the modern world in a quaint little town named Fairfold?

This book was so bizarre it was strangely satisfying. I loved the whole setting of Fairfold...it kind of reminds me of the town in The Scorpio Races (can't think of the name right now). I think setting and world building was probably one of my favorite aspects of The Darkest Part of the Forest. Holly Black has a vivid imagination that translates well onto paper. And mind you, these aren't nice fairies you're dealing with--these are cruel, manipulative...

A Grouchy Grumpy Kid's Valentine's Day

Sometimes we just don’t want to participate in certain holidays! In this children’s book, a young boy doesn’t want to do all the normal Valentine’s Day activities, like acting in a Valentine’s Day pageant or making a Valentine’s Day paper chain. His bad mood is accented by the illustrator coloring him green and making him look like a little monster. His mood eventually improves when he finds a friend that also doesn’t like Valentine’s Day.

This is a great book for any kid that takes a dislike to Valentine’s Day or think it’s an icky, muchy holiday. It'll probably get some smiles out of some boys and girls if read to a kindergarten or first grade class. Also, obviously, it's great for Valentine’s Day!

Great Book

Not shocking Burns knows how to tell a good story, but this isn't some navel gazing memoir. This is a story about perseverance. Some of the best parts deal with failure and the lessons learned. The book doesn't have a self help vibe. Instead, it reads like you're sitting across from Burns hearing the stories over a beer.

The human face of Guantanamo and American torture
This book is an incredible, first-person story about imprisonment, torture, and life in the secret world of Guantanamo. It is complete with government redaction bars as well as footnotes tying the narrative to declassified documents. Especially interesting are the human relationships formed with guards and interrogators throughout Slahi’s ordeal. Sadly, this tale illustrates the plight of many other Gitmo prisoners.

A little of Slahi’s story: he’s from Mauritania and when he was 18 went to college in Germany on a scholarship. In the early 1990s, he interrupted his studies to fight with al-Qaeda units against the communist government in Afghanistan (the U.S. supported anti-communist forces). He returned to Germany a few years later and got his degree. In November 2001 he went to his local police station in Mauritania to answer questions about suspected involvement in a terrorist plot – he’s been a prisoner ever since but never charged with a...
